Reader Reviews:Two excellent plays - Well worth buying (1/1 people found this helpful)This book is part of an excellent initiative on the part of the the Abbey theatre, whereby many of their new plays are being published as part of a new Abbey Playscripts series. Paul Mercier's play, Down the Line, is excellent - technically interesting and with that great rarity - good parts for women (that don't involve suicide). It describes in six scenes the changing life of a Dublin family during the 80s, and is funny, touching, and intelligent. Ken Bourke's Hunt for Red Wille is something else entirely: a good-natured spoof of virtually every Irish play you can think of, from the Importance of Being Ernest to some of today's offerings by Martin McDonagh et al. It's a play that works better on stage than on paper - but it DID work well on stage when performed at the Peacock theatre in Dublin last year. Worth a look, and it will raise a few laughs - but it was not written for the solitary reader. The Abbey should be comended for their support of Irish playwrights - this series is an excellent idea, and this publication is highly recommended.
