Reader Reviews:On the money (6/6 people found this helpful)This is a must have for anyone holidaying in beautiful Dubrovnik.Piers Letcher is an excellent author, his reviews of local places to eat were spot on.He didn't shirk from describing the places to avoid either.
The Perfect Companion in Dubrovnik (5/5 people found this helpful)This is an excellent little guide to Dubrovnik. The restaurant and sightseeing recommendations are first class - especially the "inexpensive" restaurants - excellent value and quality. Nice line in wry observation as well. Only two gripes - inflation has kicked in on the quoted prices, and kunas are a better option than Euros for general spending. All in all though - best bet to help you explore Dubrovnik. Excellent Guide. (7/7 people found this helpful)Like the reader from Lincoln (below), I've just returned from a week in Dubrovnik. However I have to say we found this guide excellent. On the subject of walks, no general guide book can possibly give detailed instructions; Piers Letcher does in any case make clear just how difficult the walk up to Mount Srd is. The maps are as good as you will get in what is a very compact book (just about possible to squeeze into a pocket). Indeed for its size it's full of information. And there are nice touches of humour. Inevitably one does disagree with some opinions, and restaurants/cafes open and close, but the publishers do invite comments to keep the thing up to date. I also found the Rough Guide to Croatia very useful, but that's a much bigger book. For a handy sized, all-round guide to this glorious city I thoroughly recommend this Bradt Guide. The perfect city guide (8/9 people found this helpful)I was given this guide as a gift before going to Dubrovnik this summer and I have to say it's the best city guide I've ever seen. Not only does it cover all the things you'd expect from a guide book -- what to see, where to eat, where to stay, etc., but it's also chock-full of interesting and amusing anecdotes, stories, trivia and historical detail. Highly recommended. a triumph of style over substance (4/13 people found this helpful)I have just returned from Dubrovnik today having taken this book as my guide to the city. The book is glossy, compact, and light; all pre-requisites for a travel guide. However I have several major bones of contention with it, and I think these will be shared by anyone fairly energetic who likes to save money in those tourist meccas where you end up feeling like a 'cash-cow'. First of all the descriptions given of some of the walks are nonsensical. I will take the walk up Mount Srd for example; something you will want to do to get the best aerial view possible of the city and escape the tourist hordes in the height of summer. I could not for the life of me find any of the streets described which led to the start of the mountain track. It was only after one hour's pointless searching that I gave up and found my own way involving a hair-raising walk through a busy underpass. The track was not marked and I fell upon it by sheer luck. The track itself is precarious to say the least. It is made of gravel, brick and broken stone all the way to the top and should be attempted with care by anyone with dodgy knees or ankles (especially on the way down). None of this was mentioned in the guide. Similarly an evening coastal walk around the Babin Kuk peninsula had to be abandoned after two miles as the road (which at this point still had the same width on the map as a major A road) became a two foot wide path and disappeared into woodland with no lighting. I'm sure the author has his reasons for being so in love with Dubrovnik but do these extend to a deal with the local taxi guys???!!! NO guide book should just give you one way of getting from the airport into town if there are other ways. Especially if the taxi ride costs £25 one way for a 12 mile journey as fellow travellers found out. This guide was only published last year and the author should have looked into AND printed the FACT that most of the airlines provide shuttle buses to the town bus station (again wrongly placed on the poor map) for about £3. Also a public bus goes there for £1.40 from the main bus station albeit just three times a day. It says inside the cover that the author was hammering on the door of Mrs Bradt to write and publish this guide in earnest. I can only assume his writing hand was still smarting from this process when taking notes as this can be the only excuse for the omissions mentioned above. Disappointing.
