Reader Reviews:Alright, but rather lacking in practice (0/0 people found this helpful)This is the course book for my Dutch language course at the Uni of Nottingham and I've found it fine at explaining grammar topics but it completely lacks practice exercises which makes it nigh useless when it comes to actually revising. However, it may still be the best in the business. Essential- that's the important word (2/2 people found this helpful)There is no getting away from the fact that learning a language generally requires learning grammar; that's just how it goes. There's also no esaping the fact that grammar can be difficult...unless you own this book. This really does explain it better than anything else i've seen. After my dutch classes in uni, i go back and i check this book for the grammar points we've discussed. Sometimes, in class i don't understand, but this book clears up all misgivings and confusion. It's essentially essential. Very rarely they may not have a grammar point that i'm looking for in the book, but otherwise this is the definitive guide. If you want to learn dutch, then simply get it! This book has become my little dutch language bible (10/10 people found this helpful)This book was used as a text for an introductory Dutch language University course I took several years ago. Since then it has become ragged and worn and remains of great value to me every time I need to write someone (all my relatives live in the Netherlands). It is full of interesting and relevant information about Dutch culture and about the language of the Netherlands. As useful as I have found it , I would not suggest it for someone who has no prior knowledge of the dutch language - it is typically academic and I would suggest that audio tapes should be made available with it to facilitate the learning of a rather difficult language. I have several other dutch language books but none get the use that this one does (except for the dictionary of course). Someone having some facility with dutch will find this to be a terrific addition to their bookshelf - otherwise I would look for audio tapes first and save this book for later. Groetjes!
