Reader Reviews:A good range but some essential phrases missing (5/6 people found this helpful)This phrase book has a lot of useful phrases in 11 languages. A brilliant companion if you are travelling around Eastern Europe however, if you are only planning on visiting one country I would recommend getting a phrase book covering only the specific language you need. One with a dictionary included would be even better. Many situations are covered including buying tickets, basic phrases (hello, thank you, etc), and small talk. I recommend this book if you are travelling to more that one of the countries it covers. The pronunciation guide is invaluable. Pronunciation is shown in purple next to every word or phrase (language sections in guide books tend not to have this). I used this book on a ten-day trip through the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic and Hungary. I found it very useful except for the few missing phrases. It is very easy to find the section you want and the most commonly needed words and phrases are printed at the beginning of each language section. Easy to follow (2/2 people found this helpful)Would just like to say this book is a liitle goldmine of information, but it is true about the differences between Serbian and Croatian dialects. Not sure I agree with the lady who thought this would be a problem in Croatia, I speak Serbian and never had any trouble in the region, so dont worry! Its handy to have so many languages at hand though and good size to carry around. Caution recommended (8/8 people found this helpful)I bought this book primarily for my holiday in Croatia......and it's just as well that I'd bought a study guide for Croatian as well.....Grammatical differences exist between Croatian and the local dialect of surrounding regions of the former Yugoslavia........and these were not indicated in the phrasebook-had I followed exactly what was written in the book, I would have been mistaken for a Serb...not a good way to ingratiate yourselves with the locals! the only serbian phrasebook i have found (5/5 people found this helpful)I found this book extremely useful as i am trying to learn the serbian language. It will save me carrying my dictionary and study book around with me when i go.I wanted simple phrases that get straight to the point of what i want to say.It covered all the essential conversational elements when meeting people, when asking for food, directions, buying things, emergencies and medical problems.Even though i only brought this for the Serbian language i am sure the other languages will come in handy oneday. Great value for money and lots of pages on each language.I love this book and would reccommend it to anyone who wants to make themselves heard when going to Serbia. An excellent little book for the traveller in Eastern Europe (11/11 people found this helpful)I had doubts when I purchased this book that it would be comprehensive enough to fulfil my needs but having looked through it, was pleasantly surprised at its content. It includes several Eastern Eurpoean languages and I now know that they are all closely related. Whilst this book would not meet the needs of the serious linguist, it is excellent for the holidaymaker or occasional traveller to Eastern Europe. The pronunciation of words which are full of adjacent consonants and therefore strange to the English speaker, is explained clearly. I can recommend this book to anyone thinking of taking a holiday in Eastern Europe.
