Reader Reviews:Poetical and Critical Masterpiece. (1/1 people found this helpful)I consider this book to be absolutely the finest edition of John Donne's secular love poetry. Firstly, all of his most famous love poems are here: To his Mistris Going to Bed, The Flea, A Valediction: of Weeping, The Good-morrow, The Sunne Rising and a large etc. What is more noticable in this collection than in "The Metaphysical Poets" is Donne's variety when writing secular love poetical pieces. I discovered some truly beautiful works which are otherwise difficult to find. Secondly, I would also like to point out that this is a critical edition of the poems and that Gardner truely outdoes any other editor who tackles Donne by far. Her usual clarity and wit (such as discussing the Marshall Engraving and the Lothian portrait of Donne in one of the appendixes) are what make this particular edition so recommendable. Once you enjoy Donne's way of writing poems this book will become indispensable on your bookshelf. CategoriesAmazon.co.uk places this book into the following categories:
