Reader Reviews:very helpful (0/0 people found this helpful)This is a very good, self explainatory book. Even though some of the comments in the book itself might sound scarry. For example, after certain chapter and you still cannot manage to grasp it, the author actually asks you to give up! But it serves as a motivator to me.
Complete beginners course (1/1 people found this helpful)I have been using this book for a while now, I'm on the first review chapter (Chapter 10) and in this short time I have learnt a lot of Korean. This book is not just a phrase book to teach you different phrases and expressions, it goes into depth of the Korean grammar early on so you really do grasp how the language works. It comes with a great audio CD for you to listen to various parts of the book, it would more better if the CD contained every example sentence in the book but it's great as it is. At the end of every chapter you are given exercises to do, testing to see if you have really learnt everything in that chapter, this is great at pacing your progress as you can always go back if you notice something your not sure of while doing the exercises. Some of the answers are written wrongly in the back but it's only a few and nothing really to hold you back. Better books out there... (6/9 people found this helpful)This book is for people wanting to study Korean at an intermediate level. The book starts off with phrases that are transcribed into the international phonetic alphabet (IPA), which having no prior knowledge to this can be difficult (you need to learn the Korean alphabet not the IPA!) Also the exercises and answers in the back of the book do not match. This seems to be an error in the editing, but it is still not acceptable for a 25 pound book. This is not a problem if you have someone to show you, however if you are studying alone it can become very confusing. excellent intro to both written & spoken korean language (7/9 people found this helpful)This is an excellent book for those who are wishing to study the Korean language. It is clearly set out, never letting you feel as if you have been pushed in at the deep end as so many language books do. Compared with several other guides to Korean which concentrate purely on the spoken word and rely heavily on phonetic transcription, Elementary Korean introduces the the Korean writing system (Hangul) from the start. [Be warned however - there are in excess of 1500 characters of Chinese origin (Hanji) that are regularly used in written Korean that this book does not cover so you will need to invest in other material if you intend to pursue the study of Korean beyond the elementary level.] There is a useful CD that accompanies the book included in the back cover which is of the same high standard as the rest of the book. If you are considering the study of Korean for any purpose be it educational/business/pleasure then I would hghly reccomend the purchase of this useful book.
