Reader Reviews:Elizabeth our past & present (8/11 people found this helpful)I was impressed when reading, this book by Mr. Starkey`s bringing to life, the 1st Elizabeths struggle for identity her real and imagined fear as to her wanting or not wanting marriage. Her struggle`s to stay sane and being helped in this her education (one of the best of her age) & rationalistic faith. Here her relationship with her ministers her ideas of princely government and her unique vision of the divine right of Kings embodied in her person, and exspessed throughout her life by her love for the English people her success as a ruler as opposed to her sister`Queen Mary`s disastrous reign and policies. David Starkey has reminded us all of an age long past based very clearly on a single individual`s life and reign, which has not nor cannot be repeated in todays era of the plastic political life and age in which we live, where to a certain extent we are subjected to being spoiled. She saw her life as one of great sacrifice for people and we still today look back on this achievment as not just being hers but ours as well. This makes me proud of my ancestory because she stands out so much and left an endelible imprint on our world and time even today. The story of her rise to the throne is the story of an extraordinary daughter of an extra ordinary father. She because of her basic humanity her own experiences of imprisonment left her a feeling and empathy far ahead of her time for her fellow man, this was due to the instruction given by Rodger Aascham and many others this is the ultimate achievment of David STarkey may he write more,we see how indebted she was to them, but we are to her too Thank-you Mr Starkey Similar ProductsThe Reign of Henry VIII: Personalities and Politics CategoriesAmazon.co.uk places this book into the following categories:
