A Shooting Star (5/5 people found this helpful)

This is a great book. The text is wonderful, but it is Werheimer's beautiful photographs that matter. Here is Elvis, fresh to RCA and stardom ,full of energy and promise. The Elvis I love best is captured here for the first and last time in artful and intimate photographs. Elvis dances with his childhood sweetheart, frenchkisses a young fan, listens to another take of 'Don't Be Cruel'- as unguarded as he ever would be. He is the supernova of those early stage performances and yet elsewhere he is little more than a pimply kid and the photograph of him playing piano which was used on the cover of Guralnik's definitive 'Last Train to Memphis' is one of a number of pictures which give an overwhelming sense of loneliness. This is an essential Elvis item.
