Lastest edition 1969 (0/0 people found this helpful)Essential and concise it most certainly is. I found it particularly useful as a quick introduction to the grammar from Spanish.
A scholarly yet accessible grammar - the best of this sort (16/17 people found this helpful)As this is a beginner's guide, I was astonished by its precision and accuracy in explanations, and also by the fact that it reads in an academic, unpatronising way. Not a page is wasted, honestly. easy grammar (39/39 people found this helpful)I've had this book now for 3 years. At first, I could only read a few sections as I begun to learn the basics in a begginer's class. As I progressed in Portuguese I found this book to be more and more valuable. It has helped me understand the most complicated niggling & annoying questions I've had about Portuguese sentence structures, and at the right times it seems. I would recommend it as along term companion rather than an instance fix as it is one of those useful books that you can't be without if you're going to invest long term in this language. Great for essentials of grammar (30/30 people found this helpful)I quite like this grammar. It is very clear on the basics of Portuguese grammar. You get the feeling that it was written by someone who knows the language in depth and can extract what is essential but still give full information. The reference system makes different points easy to get to, when you use the book as a reference tool. You can also use it as a course book, though there are no exercises for practice. Perhaps it would be asking for too much in a book of this size. The information on verbs is also clear and fine but in my case I needed more. I have found a superb book on Portuguese verbs, another five star book. It is called 'Portuguese Verbs Explained An Essential Guide' and the author is Manuela Cook. If you want more than the Prista book has to say on verbs, I strongly recommend this one. Like Prista, this is an author who knows her Portuguese (and her English too)!
