Reader Reviews:Wonderful and Thorough, As Lonely Planet Books Usually Are (8/8 people found this helpful)If you buy just one book for your Baltic trip, this is the one. It is well-written, chock full of practical information and historic background to make the most of your travels. There's no worry if you don't know the language or how to catch the bus in Tallinn; it helps you do it yourself.
I don't like Lonely Planet books... (16/40 people found this helpful)Not really the type of book you can dip into, hard to find what you want, highlighted summaries/tips aren't really the useful bits, layout is squashed in two columns and maps are likewise small. Those comments apply to all Lonely Planet books though, and I haven't been able to find much else on this region. Essential kit (21/26 people found this helpful)Having found so little in the way of information about the Baltic States we were very reliant upon this book when travelling in Estonia. For the most part we found the book very reliable, although the maps were not particularly brilliant - the Tallin map being crammed onto one small page. Historically inadequate (6/91 people found this helpful)This guide is too politically correct and does not face up to the Holocaust, a historical event that engulfed the Baltic States during WW ll and which contnues to resonate with passion, and which is virtually ignored in terms of visitor information. Not too bad to start you off. (28/30 people found this helpful)Using this book to help me whilst visiting Lithuania, I encountered my first problem almost right away. Setting my watch 2 hours ahead of British time, as suggested by the book, I found that I was running one hour ahead of everyone else. This was a very small error, and not too much of a problem. During my stay the guide was an excellent help. Giving me the confidence to explore and look around without too much concern. The advice on the health, and safety, risks was spot on and well valued. The actual lay out of the book could have been better set, in order to access the information required easier and quickly. Other than that, this is an essential guide for anyone travelling to the Baltic Region.
