The Best Guidebook to Ethiopia (0/0 people found this helpful)

Use this book before you travel to plan,it's reliable. For example I selected a tour operator randomely from the book-Getts, emailed and got a reply within hours.
I had a truly excellent tour and what's more when our flights were delayed due to the volcanic ash fiasco (remember that in 2010?) and the company's owner took me to his own home and hosted me! Unbelievable. But not in Ethiopia as the author makes clear. A safe recommendation then, by Briggs and evidence of his sound advice.

Briggs writes in an inimical style. I laughed often as he chooses to interlace fact with his own opinion on, well, just about everything. And as I've lived in Africa I can validate that he's spot on. How often is a guidebook entertaining?

Philip Briggs writes pages about Ethiopian music, for example. He's both knowledgeable and enthusiastic so dipping into the book on a daily basis I learned so much about the country that wouldn't otherwise have been available to me.

I particularly liked the decent map at the beginning, in colour and helpful in orienting you quickly.

Facts change so you can go online and read updates submitted by travellers. This website is managed by Briggs. Yes, this is an author whose about as professional in delivering a service to his readers as its possible to be - don't delay, this is the book you want to enjoy this wonderful country.

First time Bradt guide user (0/0 people found this helpful)

I've always been a Lonely Planet girl, thought Bradt guides were for grown ups (read: slightly older conservative types not so keen on budget hostels etc), but all the forums seemed to recommend this for my recent trip to Ethiopia so I branched out and I'm really glad I did.

There's a good layout to this, loads of useful practical information, good mix of budget and other options, but just one gripe.....sometimes they mention say a fab cafe then it's nowhere to be found on the map they've provided. Great excuse to ask around and chat to more people, but sometimes if there's a recommendation for killer ice cream you just want to get straight to it!

exceptional work (0/0 people found this helpful)

I bought this book before visiting Ethiopia in August 2009 and I definitely recommend it as an extremely informative, accurate and up to date guide. I also liked the personal feeling of the author towards the country. I guess it needs to love a country in order to write about and this is the case here. Well done, Bradt! Not a surprise that even our local guides had this book as a reference!

Great Read, totally reliable (0/0 people found this helpful)

As has been mentioned in other reviews of this Ethiopian guide, this book never fails.

It is without doubt the most thorough and trustworthy travel guide out there and totally outclasses the opposition on depth of research, up-to-date information and day-to-day practicality.

Having traveled Ethiopia and Eritrea in 2008 i can safely say that this book saved me hours of fuss, thousands of birr and many many stressful moments.

Dont bother with the rest, go for the best, buy Bradt!
