4/5 stars

A tragic waste (5/6 people found this helpful)

As an avid reader of Holocaust material, it seems that there will never be an end to the literature devoted to the subject; nor should there be. AS familiar as I am with much of this tragic period in Polish history, I still found this a staggering and heart-wrenching read.

The horror we need to know (6/7 people found this helpful)

My Father recently visited Aushwitz

Something that we were never taught about at school in the 1990's only that Hitler was an evil man.

I read this book in one reading and in someway feel guilty that I did not realise the horrors that people of mr Grandfathers generation went through. I find it unbelievable that as an educated man of thirty I now only realise the true horrors of what went on.

An amazing book which makes the unreal unfortunately real. We cannot change the past but hopefully the future will be better. Read it and hope that something will change.

Eyewitness Auschwitz (24/27 people found this helpful)

This book gives you a real insight to the horrors of Auschwitz and Birkenau, from within the Crematorium(s) itsself. Harrowing account of the hardship prisoners (POW) were subjected too. This book is no bars hold... its straight to the point including all the gruesome details. A graphic account of what it was like to live and survive in Auschwitz. Fantasic book and a must read for those with interest in WWII.

Just Amazing (34/35 people found this helpful)

I would feel it wrong to say I enjoyed a book of this nature. But, I was astounded by this book, so moving at times to bring you to tears, gruesome enough to make you feel ill, but SO necessary to read. I am not jewish, but i feel everyone should read this book and understand what happened, it must never be forgotten.

another remarkable survival story (31/31 people found this helpful)

I have read a great amount of accounts by holocaust survivers. They all are remarkable, and all add somthing to the history we should never forget.

This book deals in considerable depth with the practicalities of the mass murders, the gas chambers and crematoria. As so few of the Sonderkommando survived to bear witness, Mullers account bears added importance.

One of the most remarkable things about this book is the simple matter-of-fact way in which Muller relates his account. Almost as if he were talking about some 9 to 5 factory job. What really comes across is how the Nazis dehumanised those in their charge to perform these tasks, but still those like Muller somehow survived and came out the other side.
