Alice King's Fabulous Fizz is a reader-friendly guide to choosing and drinking champagne and sparkling wines "for every occasion". Actually, it's rather more than that. Alice King is a woman with a passion and a mission: to convert us all to fizz, not just at weddings and other feasts, but any time. Brunches, barbecues and informal suppers can all benefit. Fizz after all is the celebration drink, so its addition to any occasion is bound to impart an extra lift. And Alice King really does cover just about every occasion. She remarks, for example, that Korbel Brut NV is an excellent accompaniment to hamburgers, "its crisp acidity cutting through the richness of the dish". That's worth knowing. So is her contention that one of the perfect moments to open a bottle of fizz is when you're curled up on the sofa with a good movie and a take-away.
Alice King writes with a fair bit of fizz herself (the words fabulous and fizz seem to fizz up in every other sentence). She divides her fizzes up by weight or body--a sensible approach, since her aim is to match the fizz to the occasion and different occasions demand different styles of fizz--and discusses what might be appropriate when and why. A picnic? Perhaps Jacquart Brut Mosaique NV. A wedding toast? Champagne Heidseck Monopole Diamant Bleu, 1961 vintage.
