Like any used car it has many problems. (3/4 people found this helpful)

All second hand cars are old, this one is a vintage piece from 1984 . Although no Orwellain nightmare ,it is starting to show its age. Although this is an updated version , but all this means is from time to time ,Rick has added in brackets statements like ( There's more info on the WWW ) or ( Today DV is used as much as 16 mm ) . As much as ?!? Or a billion times more than ?

A lot of time is wasted talking about hands on films editing , although there is a 'new' chapter that says if you buy a DV camera , computer and firewire you can edit in your own home. Children do this at school , I don't need to spend £10 to go back to learn the bleeding obvious.

Ricks biggest gaff is when he confuses HD TV , high definition television , with digital television . He says that when everything is broadcast in HD you'll have to get a special adapter to watch it on a normal TV. Nothing is going to be broadcast on HD things are going to be RECORDED on to it.

This is a old school book for blokes with beards and wind-up camera's. Kick its sad deflated tyres, shake your head and walk away.

Informative but not all it appears to be (0/1 people found this helpful)

The author brings too much of his personal bias (bitterness?)to his presented view of the movie industry. At one point he states that you should stay away from professional distributors and "go it alone" as he doesn't trust them. If your ambition to to always be making films at used car prices then this is the book for you. If you hope to be doing more than that for the rest of your career then this book might make an interesting read but not much else. An average book with an 'average' outlook on film production.

A must for wannabe film directors and producers! (8/9 people found this helpful)

This is the book that could help start the digital revolution for you. Rick Schmidt gives you everything you need to start and finish your film, less the cash, of course. There is the layout, the script writing, the shooting, which includes sound, visual tricks and clever tips. Then he goes on to tell you how to edit your materpiece. Finally there is the all important distribution factor. Of course he does not pull punches when it comes to money matters either. He is pragmatic and inventive in all aspects of the book and, let's be fair, he has a track record to prove it. So why have a film in your drawer when you could have it on the silver screen! Rick Schmidt's book is a must for all wannabe filmakers and I would urge them to order now to get in on the great new technology that is ready to make you an Independent Film Director.
