Reader Reviews:A Truly Shocking Read (6/8 people found this helpful)I bought this book after it was reviewed in a periodical and after reading the snippets I was hooked.
A landmark work on the media (6/9 people found this helpful)There are few journalists who would risk the opprobrium of their own industry by airing its filthy laundry in public and dissecting it so witheringly, as Davies does in this landmark work. There are even fewer who possess his investigative skills, narrative ability and clarity of prose. However, Flat Earth News is not without its faults - for example, according to Private Eye the section on BBC online doesn't quite measure up to the reality. But overall, as an expose of the failures of the British press, Flat Earth News is without equal.
100% worth reading. (13/16 people found this helpful)I come from the other end of the political spectrum as the author, but once you get past the lame left wing politics of the author, then if even one percent of the things in this book are true then it's worth the price of buying it. The manipulations of the PR industry intrigued me greatly, particularly the section on the Natwest Three. I must admit that I fell for the rubbish promoted by the PR company acting on their behalf but then so did many political luminaries who, perhaps, should've known better. Ditto Iraq, Greenpeace, etc etc. The book is loaded with examples. Absolutely fascinating read for anyone interested in the media. I always thought that the media could be manipulated, but never did I think that it was to this extent and with such malice and cynicism. Essential reading, but "NEWS" from whatever source will never be the same once you've read this book. You're never read the papers in the same light again (17/20 people found this helpful)A truly disturbing investigation into how the modern media has been corrupted to provide a distorted view of the 'news'. If you read any of the non-red top papers it provides a fascinating insight to what has happened to the whole concept of journalism in the last 30 or 40 years and it's not what you may think.
