Brilliant! (0/0 people found this helpful)

A fantastic read. A fascinating insite to the day to day life of a county cricketer. I read this as a non-Surrey fan and could not put it down. If I had the opportunity to sit down and ask questions of a county cricketer then this book has covered pretty much every question. The book is obviously Surrey specific but really you feel that this could be the story of a season for any club.

Interesting but not top class (0/0 people found this helpful)

Mark Ramprakash's account of Surrey's 2005 season is an interesting and entertaining read but lacks some depth and has several annoying typographical and factual errors, particularly concerning opposition players' names. His description of Surrey's troubled season and his own struggles with being stand-in captain make interesting reading and there are lots of insights into the different approaches of various team members. Occasionally, he develops a tangential point drawing on his earlier experiences, which is most welcome, but on several occasions, he alludes to the examples of great players such as Desmond Haynes and Mike Gatting and their influence in particular situations without going on to describe the impact it had on his own approach to cricket. Overall, a good, but not great, read.

Eloquent account (0/0 people found this helpful)

Interesting and erudite writing from a player whose undoubted talent was tragically obscured at international level. Ramprakash produces a fine account of the biggest county team on the circuit.

Retaining freshness and incisive comment in diaries is very difficult but its no problem to this author. I await his autobiography with interest as (like many) I want to hear his reasons for his England underachievement. Was it mental or was he appallingly man-managed by his various captains?

Great holiday reading whoever you follow

Don't Miss This!!! (3/3 people found this helpful)

Yes, I'm a Surrey fan and yes this book is of the greatest interest to those of us who witnessed the awful antics in 2005!! However, it does provide a good insight into the daily grind of the average county cricketer.

It is fascinating to read what was going on in the dressing room while those of us who have paid our money were waiting for the team to play to the best of their ability. Well, it didn't happen and this book reveals why.

Written with a very human way (e.g I had forgotten that cricketers have family lives as well!) and with clarity and humour, the book is very difficult to put down. However, I do not feel that Mark gets to grips with the role of the county captain (Mark Butcher), the coach (Steve Rixon) and himself, the stand-in Captain. He says that he learnt a lot from his days at Middlesex with John Buchannan as coach but he does not seem to have put this learning into practice during his extremely difficult year at the Oval.

Now that Surrey are back in the first division all will be forgiven, but why do highly paid cricketers have such terrible attitudes towards their team mates, their employers and most importantly the paying spectator? Shame on them!!

In conclusion, give this a wirl, you will not be disappointed, honest!!
