I have used Robert Alter's Genesis over some time and have found the translation interesting and exciting. His commentary is short but to the point and makes for a good understanding of the text. I would recommend it highly to the general reader as well as to the more specialised student of Bible texts. It avoids technical jargon and speaks ina language for all to understand.
