This Gershwin arrangement for Trombone or Bassoon is great fun. There are few playalong CD's for bassoon so this is great find for the bassoonist. For bassoon players, I suggest dropping down an octave in some phrases to show off the range of the bassoon. This CD without the solo line (which is played by the Trombone) can also be used to practice improvising.
The best intermediate jazz-style arrangements I've seen (55/56 people found this helpful)
I bought this book in the States not long after it was published and think it's excellent. For those of us not sufficiently gifted or who just don't have the time or staying power to learn to improvise, it's nice to be able to play something that is really jazzy, but not too difficult. There is a a good range of lovely arrangements of Gershwin melodies ranging in difficulty from slow and straightforward to somewhat more challenging. I have several similar books, but none as good as this. In the other books, the arrangements are often unsatisfying, and many seem to assume complete mastery of your instrument before you even start.
The difference with this book is that the arrangements sound really good and do not assume high levels of skill. For instance, the arrangement of Embraceable You is absolutely superb and easy to play as well! There are ten other favourites including I've got a crush on you, Nice work if you can get it, But not for me and Fascinating Rhythm.
The accompanying CD has the usual tracks with and without lead instrument and these are recorded to a high standard, so that when you play along you can at least pretend you are a Pro!! Great book, great fun, great value.
