Richard Shannon has earned a reputation as a Gladstone scholar. This is the second volume of his biography, and quite a tour de force. Shannon captures the man, the era, the political world. A thorough piece of scholarship, but well written, enjoyable as both biography and history, and an essential for anyone studying the man or the period. Here available in paperback, and excellent value.
