More Witchcraft for the Potter Generation (2/12 people found this helpful)

In some ways I really like this book but as an adult and a parent concerned about the prevalence of witchcraft in children's literature I wouldn't recommend it. It's too long. It misses a good opportunity to discuss the real history of witch trials and that those who were accused of being witches were very often NOT.
The toad in the book is a 'familiar'. Why not just call it a demon in slimy clothing? Various spells are cast. Hex's are put on Rebecca's enemies. The toad is particularly amoral but at least Rebecca tries to educate him in the niceties of proper behaviour.
My concern is simply this: that young girls will resort to witchcraft to solve their relationship problems, and as we all know young ladies have frequent bust-ups with their friends. The good thing at the end of the story is that Rebecca braves it to go and be nice to her 'enemy'. But she achieved this without the help of Glubbslyme. Glubbslyme gets her into trouble a few times and she doesn't really enjoy it. She gets her own back by forcing him to make them both fly.
For me, I felt the use of sweets to make a 'nice' voodoo doll, the use of everyday ingredients to make potions and the chanting of magical words made me feel uneasy. I would hate to think that children's interest in witchcraft would be sparked by such a book.

This is a mind boggling book.It gets really interesting in the middle.Rebecca finds a toad called 'Glubbslyme' and he can talk and do magic.I could not put the book down till i had finished it.It is such a magical book.I would recommend it to people who like a bit of magic in books and cliffhangers in the end.It can be read by people aged beetween 8-12.

Glubbslyme is a great book, full of laughter and entertainment. It is about a frog who can talk, and when Rebecca makes a wish it comes true, but not in the way she wants it to!!!! My favourite part of the book is when Rebecca puts the umbrella up when it starts to rain, and she goes floating up into the air, with the frog!!! I really recommend this book, it is one of the best Jacqueline Wilson books!!

hi my name is lucy and i have just read glubbslyme it was one of my fav books in the whole wide world.If you like witchcraft and wizardry you are sure to love this bookand if you don't you will love it anyway.

This book is about a girl called Rebecca who jumps into a witches pond and meets a frog called Glubslime. Rebecca and Glubslime become great friends and have lots of adventures together. Her big secret is to not tell her dad about Glubslime as he did not allow her to keep a pet.If you want to find out more you will have to read the book. This is a funny book that all fans of Jaqueline Wilson will really love. I recommend for all children ages 8-11.
