Outrageously Biased (4/4 people found this helpful)

I bought this short biography of Gordown Brown hoping for a sympathetic but balanced account of the new Prime Minister. But to my immense disappointment and frustration, Francis Beckett makes absolutely no attempt at objectivity. This is clearly not intended to be a scholarly or fair analysis, but is instead a piece of political propaganda from a self-confessed supporter of Brown. I cannot think who would benefit from reading such a relentlessly and outrageously biased book, which is so one-sided at times it is almost laughable.

From the outset, Beckett portrays Brown in such a shining light that even the most sympathetic reader will be left asking questions. He seems to harbour what seems to be a real hatred of Tony Blair, blaming him for everything that has gone wrong for Labour whilst absolving Brown of almost all blame. He is unable to retain any objectivity for most of the book; for example, slipping in an entirely unnecessary description of Blair's public school as a "portentous old pile" and writing such accusations as "the decision to focus on trust schools seemed to be Blair's gesture of contempt for a party he considers not worthy of him".

Beckett should be ashamed.

Is Gordon Brown our greatest politician? (5/5 people found this helpful)

Beckett is a self-confessed Brown admirer and it shows in this 'biography' where not one important criticism of Brown is included. Instead we are told that Brown was responsible for all that was good in Tony Blair's 10 year term as Prime Minister, with the implication that Blair was responsible for everything that was bad. Worth reading for what it reveals about the Brownite faction and their veiw of the world.
