Editorial Review:Nearly 50 years after the first edition was published, Guinness World Records isn't so much a book as an institution, having sold over 90 million copies to date, in 23 different languages. Every year, its publishers find ever crazier new achievements to include, for example the live-insect eating capers of England's own Ken Edwards, who's crunched 36 medium-sized cockroaches in one minute. Or Spain's tomatina festival, the world's largest food fight--at the 1999 event 25,000 people spent one hour hurling around 120 tonnes of tomatoes at each other. Then there's French adventurer Remy Bricka, the first man to walk all the way across the Atlantic Ocean. He made it from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean on floating skis 4.2 meters long. It took him 31 days, and when he finally arrived in Trinidad he was reported to have been hallucinating and suffering from severe delirium. The 2002 edition includes lots of links to the Guinness World Records Web site, so that trivia junkies can feed their addiction even more. Colourfully illustrated--the photos are often very striking--it includes a high proportion of rather eccentric records, such as "most batteries in a work of art" or "most sequined body", which will irritate some readers and delight others. Numerous more "serious" records retain a place, but the emphasis is on the spectacular, sensational and just plain wacky. --David Pickering Reader Reviews:not the best and not the worst that is all I can say! (0/0 people found this helpful)this book has only 4 pages we could find with interesting facts. It has lots of nice pictures but hardly any decent writing describing the pictures. the producers of this book have not thought very wisely about this book. poor Quality. THINK BEFORE YOU WRITE! Sad Demise Of A Once Interesting Book (3/4 people found this helpful)What a pity! After nearly 40 editions of this once so interesting book of records, it has to decline into "Belly Fluff" &" Most Sequined Body" How a once good book has decended into trash (3/5 people found this helpful)Once. The Guiness Book of Records was informative on serious subjects - ones you would argue about in a pub. Now it has decended into total trivia - Most Belly Fluff - Most sequined body etc etc etc. Do we REALLY need this?.The book - and I now have 35 different editions so I have noted the decline - needs to get back to the Good Old Days when Mr. McWhirter was editor> Shame on you Guiness. Picked it up and couldn't put it down (8/12 people found this helpful)Found it to be really facinating. Bought it for my brother and ended up reading it before he did. Would recommend this for all you record breaking fans and new readers as it has a bit of everything for all ages whatever you like. Don't miss the links to the web sites as they give you loads more information and it's free! Guess you can tell I liked it alot and I'm a new reader of the book. Can't wait for the next one! Not very good (9/16 people found this helpful)First let me say I liked the last 3 Guinness World Record Books (I got them for Christmas) and theres still some cool stuff in this one so I brought it myself. But lots of the new records are a bit dumb, like "Most batteries in a work of art". Its like anyone can get in the book now if you have a crazy idea. The book looks a bit stupid aswell, like an old fashioned scifi movie. Its like what grandads think kids will like, with some stupid ringtones you can download. Well what about poor kids who don't have a mobile phone, did anyone think of them. So buy it if you want to collect all the Guiness Books, but its not really worth it otherwise, unless you are quite young (maybe about 7 or 8).
