Reader Reviews:
Interesting and useful (2/2 people found this helpful)This provides a good introduction for the enthusiastic beginner (to networking and security) or for someone who needs to learn this stuff because of work/professional interests. It's written in a very readable style and has plenty of information, tips and examples. The authors intentions seem a little ambiguous. There's lots of talk about securing your network and having proper policies and systems in place as if the book is directed at security professionals, but at the same time there is a lot of information of interest to the enthusiastic newcomer to hacking. A lot of the material is presented from the hacker's viewpoint and given in the manner of how to break in rather than how to protect your network. This is not a criticism - it doesn't encourage any destructive beghaviour and it does give an idea of hacker mentality and of how to secure your network by thinking the same way as a potential intruder might do. It also generally sticks to the correct definition of a hacker, someone who is interested in computers and problem solving, etc., rather than the media-propagated definition of the anti-social, destuctive criminal. The coverage is very impressive with instructions for the use of, and defences against, a large number of hacking tools for both Windows and UNIX platforms. There are descriptions of well-known (and less well-known) exploits and code examples. The accompanying CD includes code examples and hacking applications/scripts - as I said the intentions do seem a bit ambiguous. The appendices include a useful technology primer which describes network and internet technologies. This is aimed at the computer-literate, assuming a certain degree of knowledge to start with and it goes on to give a good general understanding of networks, TCP/IP etc which should provide the required knowledge to either become a better hacker or a better security professional. There is also an appendix on C++ programming which seems a little out of place. It attempts to get the reader from absolute beginner to understanding how to write distributed software and hacking tools in the space of 135 pages. It might have just been better to give the reader an overview of network programming and development environments and then direct the reader to some books which give an in-depth treatment. I can thoroughly recommend this to anyone with an interest in hacking or network computing and to anyone taking their first steps along this path who requires both a broad and deep introduction. As it assumes some prior knowledge and goes into detail it makes a good second book to follow on from "Hacker's Handbook" by Dr. K.
