Cool (2/2 people found this helpful)

I've been trying to learn Java for 7 years and had always stopped after going a little distance, an important reason being its so boring to read through a "normal" tech book. But this book's theme of entertaining way of teaching has kept my interest and I think this time I've learned it in full.

Quack. (1/1 people found this helpful)

Absolutely brilliant book. Covers a large amount of what is required for SCJP certification but in leisurely "brain friendly" format. If you are familiar with a block structured language & OO concepts then dive straight in. For a total beginner then you might need something to complement this book in order to get the ideas around inheritance, instantiation, encapsulation etc..

Covers, RMI, Swing, threads, Collections/generics and many other topics with working examples. Full of many gags if you like that sort of thing. Probably over priced but look out for a second hand one if you can.

Very good for beginners (7/7 people found this helpful)

I truly recommend this one for everyone who is starting in JAVA out there. It's very clear and amusing on explaining things that are normally boring...

I only think it could include more examples. Specially sockets and RMI since it's the topics i was looking for and i found it a little poor on these subjects. But either way i recommend for every starting java student to have it on the shelf!
This book is not for people who want web development like applets and servlets though - for that you have the HF servlets and jsp.

Tries to hard (7/8 people found this helpful)

I found this book hard to get on with. I felt that it had to much going on on each page and was messy. I understand that Sierra is tying to teach java to many different learning styles (pragmatic, activist, theorist and reflectist)but that is a hard task. It is done quite well and has some very interesting points. Though I did not like the abstract coding, I like coding to actually relate to real life and not about when a dog does or doesn't bark. Though it is original to have coding all about animals.
Maybe I am to much of a theorist to like this book, but I did like most of the exercises. It was all just to messy for me.
