A Family Saga (0/0 people found this helpful)

I read this book when I was sixteen and over the years I have reread it a number of times. The strong story line and intresting charcters have made it one of my favorite novels of all time. Heaven Leigh Casteel is a stong and brave charcter who comes arcoss many hardships in her young life in the mountain community of America. Her brothers and sisters also have to overcome obstacles and the story deals with place time and indenity. The Father Luke Casteel is an enigma a harsh man who also has had to find his place in the world as he mourns his beloved Angel. The story is powerful and sets up what is to follow in a intriguing way.

AN EXCELLENT START TO THE CASTEEL SAGA (1/1 people found this helpful)

This book introduces the Casteel children and their shocking living conditions in a mountain shack in Virginia. The description of the children and their individual personalities is very good and you feel that you really know them and the hardships they are having to live with and encounter at school. Heaven, the older of five siblings, has the added misfortune of being the child born of her fathers first wife who died in childbirth bringing her into the world. This makes for a great deal of resentment between Heaven and her father. I found it a very fast and interesting read and couldn't wait to start the second in the series, Dark Angel.

Great!!!!! (7/7 people found this helpful)

Heaven is the first story of the Casteel-Tatterton saga, in which Heaven Leigh Casteel is the young girl trying to keep herself and her siblings alive and together. If readers have already read the prequel to this series then they know of the unforunate events that came upon Heaven's young mother Leigh. The story begins with Heaven hearing of her true heritage from her grandmother on the eve of her tenth birthday next to a grave in the Willies. Heaven is amazed to know that she came, not from the mother she has always known, but from a wealthy bostonian girl(whom the grave belongs to). After hearing the news Heaven is astounded but she still has that gnawing feeling in her stomach wishing for the love of her father who has always hated her for reasons unbeknown to her. Later on in the book Heaven is sold to strangers for $500 and made to be a cook, cleaner and punchbag to Kitty Dennison. Heaven's only saviour is her step-father Cal who later takes advantage of her vulnerability and once again heaven feels betrayed by the person she loved. This book is truley awe-inspiring and I'd give it 10 out of 10 every time! It is a must read!!

excellent book (1/1 people found this helpful)

I love this book so much! It grips me! Heaven and the other books in the Casteel Series really touch me. It makes you think that these things really could be happening in real life. It brings tears to my eyes the way Heaven and her brothers and sisters are sold by their father. And every trial and tribulation that heaven encounters... you feel them with her every step of the way! Must buy!!!

Absolutely her best (4/4 people found this helpful)

Undoubtedly this book and "Flowers In The Attic" are the best books of Virginia Andrews. I couldn't put it down 'til I read the last letter and then I wanted to get the sequel immediately. Heaven is a strong young girl and all the other characters and relationships are extremely well-written, especially the love-hate feeling between Heaven and her father. When reading this book you'll feel their joys and tragedies as if they were happening to you. If you haven't read any of Andrews' books then begin with this one.
