The Second book in the Rebus series (0/0 people found this helpful)

`Hide and Seek' is the second book in the Rebus series. In this novel a young junkie has been found dead in a squat, underneath a drawing of a pentagram. Whilst most don't seem interested in the death, Rebus investigates and uncovers links to the sleazy underbelly of Edinburgh. This novel also sees Rebus make an unusual alliance with a young officer, Brian Holmes.
The new introduction by the author is really interesting as Rankin reflects on his work and points out the flaws that he now sees. It's fascinating to watch the progression of a novelist from their own perspective.

I liked the novel very much. It's short and pacey, but I think that the character and his network develops much further in later novels and is more psychologically and intellectually realistic later on which is why I've only given it three stars. Nevertheless, recommended.

Great!!!! Legendary Author!!! (0/0 people found this helpful)

This was the first Rebus book i brought - when i got home i started reading it straight away and couldnt put it down! That was about a month ago, and since then I have added 4 more Rebus novels to my collection. I am currently half way through The Black Book and if it wasnt for college then I wouldnt put it down.

Ian Rankin has got to be the best Crime Thriller writer ever published!
I have preordered and 'wish listed' the rest of his books.
Deff would recommand as a must-read author!

Not the best from rankin Ive read - however i have the problem that I bought the books out of order so probably started with some of his more polished work.Having said that the first book in the series read better. If you know theway Rankin writes its not too hard to spot the culprit but half the fun is making the educated guesses.
I have now got the entire Rebus stored away so as of the Black Books im looking forward to some reading order.

Not the best (3/4 people found this helpful)

Hide and Seek is, perhaps, not the most technically accomplished crime novel. There are three types of characters. Firstly, we have the police. Secondly, we have those involved in the dastardly deeds. Thirdly, we have red herrings to throw us off the scent. This makes for quite a claustrophobic novel, without the room to develop Inspector Rebus as a character or really explore the city of Edinburgh. There is little sense of the past - characters just are what they are.

The plot is far fetched - even by the standards of the crime novel. The murders seem to be disproportionate given the relatively mundane level of nefarious activity that they were designed to protect. Without giving the game away, that nefarious activity itself lacks a sense of proportion too. And is it really de rigeur for the detective to become personally imperilled. I know we are talking about escapist fiction, but most murderers do not stalk those who are investigating them.

There is also an absolute howler where the guys from Rebus's police station raid a dog fighting ring in Fife. Unfortunately - and you'd think Ian Rankin would have known being a Fifer himself - Fife has its own police force. Lothian and Borders Police would not raid dog fighting rings across the water and end up in Dunfermline police station.

I suspect the redeeming feature of the novel is a sense of place. Edinburgh is a fantastic city and the glimpses we are allowed to see of the world heritage site and its seamier underbelly do draw the reader in. I hope, though, that later Rebus novels allow that exploration to be more than skin deep, and to bring in characters who are not quite so essential to the plot.

More Rebus Fun (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is the second book of the Rebus World.

This time a junkie has been found dead in a squat in a poor port of Edinburgh. Only Rebus seems keen to see what actually went on. The book introduces some more of Rebus, his promotion, his failings in Love and a new sidkick for him to work with.

The book was hard at first compared with the first one, but it was still a good read.

After a meeting with some of Edinburgh top money makers, things in the Rebus crime are still unsolved, it isnt until the final day or so that you get to see why the top brass were introduved, a very good read indeed.

Be prepared for a massive twist and wind in a good book.
