At last a bible that I can understand and that is accurate. Some scholars have criticised the NLT2 and commented that some passages did not need to be put into plain English. But we cannot all be scholars and until put into plain English by the NLT2 the meaning of some of the first century Greek passages translated word for word in literal translations and even some dynamic translations was completely lost on me. The NLT2 uses the "Alexandrian text of the United Bible Societies and Nestle and Aland but where it differs from the Received Text the Received Text is noted at the bottom of each page.
The version I have is the "Gift and Award Bible". It has most of the features you need. The binding is semi-hardback with a hardwearing cover. There are life notes in the front and every page has notes about the translation. There are notes about each book at the beginning of each book. There are only two maps in the whole bible though, both in the back. One is a general topographical map of Palestine the other is a political map of Palestine in the time of Christ. There are no maps in this version of Palestine in Old Testament times, nor of the Mediterranean in the time of the Acts. All the same though it is a lot of bible for the money and I am well pleased with it.
I will still use my KJV as my best literal version and will refer to the NLT2 for passages that I cannot understand.
If anyone asks me to recommend a modern version I will have no hesitation in recommending the NLT 2nd edition.
