Reader Reviews:

1/5 stars

Enticing title, dissapointing content. (0/0 people found this helpful)

Very dissapointing book. I bought this on the strength of the 5 star reviews, however I note that there are now some lower rated ones listed.

The title of the book assumes that the reader has a family. I cannot believe that anyone already cooking for a family needs to be reminded that leftover roast meat can be made into a shepherd's pie. Chicken stock for soups can be made from the carcass or that 'things on toast' can be make a quick meal - just in case we're in any doubt the author lists these - beans, cheese, tinned oily fish Etc. (seriously). I had to re-read the reviews as I thought I must have ordered the wrong book - as a busy working mum, not on a budget but concious of the rising cost of our groceries I was hoping for something rather more insigtful than the gem of knowledge which suggests that homemade soup is a cheap, nutritious and filling.

The final third of the book is dedicated to parent and child baking - fairy cakes, rice krispie cakes Etc. At this point I started looking for the packing tape - I have never bothered returning anything to amazon before and if something is not to my taste, then it generally ends up in the school tombola, however I would be embaressed to be seen passing this on, let alone looking like I was reccommending it.

good value for money & interesting (1/1 people found this helpful)

The main pull for me was trying to feed the family well on a low budget & I realise prices change & this book is now a couple of years old, but 'feed your family for £30 a week' and only give them one meal a day!

I may sound disppointed or critical but I am not, I'm glad I have the book & there are plenty of low cost ideas & along the encouragement needed to create a healthy meal for fussy eaters on a low budget...

Over all very pleased & would recommend this to someone trying to reduce food costs.

(not for someone who is looking for colourful pictures or a coffee table type book)

Its Helpful but too basic (4/6 people found this helpful)

An interesting book with humour and a few helpful hints but I have been cooking for a family for 30 years - probably of more use to the younger reader with limited kitchen skills - I will give this to my daughter in the hope that I might come home to a cooked meal that doesnt cost £5 a head and leave every pan and surface in the kitchen covered in goo! I am an optimist at heart.
Disappointingly several pages fell out as I read it so make sure you have sellotape to hand.

very very disappointed (1/16 people found this helpful)

The name of this book is exactly the opposite of what is inside. Anyone want to buy this book from me?

All you need for weekday meals (4/4 people found this helpful)

I normally don't like recipe books without pictures, but this isn't your average 'pretty to look at' recipe book. The format is as straightforward as the concept and the recipes. I'm not very confident about cooking meals (although I love baking), but the recipes and explanations are great. I love that there is a section on how to prepare vegetables too! Our first week of meals cost just under £30! This book has been just the thing to kickstart my way into making hearty healthy meals everyday after work without the stress or the long list of pricey ingredients. I love it!
