Reader Reviews:Beautiful, poignant, celebratory and fabulous. (15/15 people found this helpful)Within this slim volume are some of the most beautiful pieces of lyrical poetry I have ever read. The imagery is mostly simple and direct, but still with that aura of magic that the marks the best of lyric poetry. It is by turns witty, pictorial, narrative and always elegant. The language is cleverly worked informal. Whether it is the delicate mixture of pastoral imagery and social comedy of "The Tarrying Garden" or the exquisite tale-telling of "Curious Mishaps", his touch never fails him. Buy it and show to anybody who says they don't write beautiful poems anymore. Or buy it to share in his understanding of the people and cultures of India, England, China and USA. Or buy to immerse yourself in his A little book beautifully written (8/8 people found this helpful)As a Vikram Seth fan I had to buy this book, and I was not disappointed. On the whole I prefer his novels, with "A Suitable Boy" high on the list of the best books I've ever read. But I've loved everything he's written and this is no exception. It is filled with imagery from China, India and the States. Seth manages to capture the different essences of these places with his words, transporting the reader through the lives and situations he describes. Don't be put off if poetry is not your thing, after all, who would have believed one could read a whole novel in verse (and love it) until Seth produced "The Golden Gate". This little book is worth having in any Seth collection where you can dip into it from time to time.
