Reader Reviews:gugugu, gagaga (1/1 people found this helpful)'A journey without conviction', Allen writes of this book, and it shows. Supposedly, he allows himself to be persuaded of a preposterous cod-evolutionary theory. In order to substantiate it he goes looking for the primitive ape-men which, legend has it, survive on certain Indonesian islands. What follows bears more resemblance to the cynical, post-modern 'humorous' travelogue - complete with drug overdoses, exotic women and eccentric rural characters - than to Allen's usual metier .
The author's sense of humour at its best. (12/12 people found this helpful)Another superb read from Benedict Allen in which the author's wonderfully understated sense of humour is at its best. His sharp eye for details of human characteristics and habits, and gentle handling of such, highlight this journey through Sumatra in search of the elusive Gugu. Benedict writes in a way that one has a sense of being his travelling companion throughout and, at the same time, effortlessly absorbing a wealth of anthroplogical and geographical information about Sumatra.
