Reader Reviews:I can make you rich by Paul McKenna (0/2 people found this helpful)This is a rehash of the numerous books on the market which are written by the Americans only they do it better. Mind you, Mr McKenna has looked at the market and decided that whatever the Americans can do, he can do. I have a certain sympathy with this and cannot blame him for getting on the bandwagon and making himself rich into the bargain. I also realise that there is room for everyone and he is appealing to the British market in a way that the Americans obviously do not. Sometimes, however, the British do need the "Can do" attitude that the Americans are so very good at and in the context of this type of book and CD who would you rather learn from, the blatently successful, the ones who "walk the walk" or someone who gently pandered to your sensibilities. Pandering or gently guiding will not make you rich. You need fire and determination to succeed. The softly, softly approach does not work in this context. I can make me rich! (1/3 people found this helpful)OK, it does explain how to change your mind set, which is probably 99% of what you need to do, so I did by reselling this and making myself not quite as rich as I was before I bought it.
I need a good thrashing (1/7 people found this helpful)How many of the five-star reviewers here are now rich do you think?
empowering (6/7 people found this helpful)I came across this book as the perfect partner to Making Time by Steve Taylor - a different kind of self-help book but somehow they do complement each other. I was attracted to Paul McKenna's book by the reviews which said that he doesn't treat 'riches' purely in material terms, and although I don't think this side of the book is emphasised enough, it makes it a much more rewarding and well-rounded book than other more superficial 'get rich quick' books. I don't see myself as a particularly materialistic person, but this book has made me feel empowered.
Desire plus a plan and its all so easy - really? (8/14 people found this helpful)Do you seriously believe the title? I would love to, but I don't. As is usual for this type of book, there are a lot of 'exercises' where you yourself need to decide what kind of richness you desire, and not necessarily solely in terms of financial security. Having decided what it is you want from life you set your path based on those desires. If you like this way of organising your thoughts you'll probably like the book. If you find all that stuff tedious, or you don't really know what you want, then I doubt you'll like the book. Personally, I persevered with it more than I had expected, but I soon began to sense internal revolt at the exercises. Its not that I don't want to be rich, its more that my brain is not wired like that. Maybe it'll work for you, and maybe I'm just not a rich thinker. I generously gave 3 stars because I genuinely think Mr McKenna believes in his methods, but they won't suit everyone. I just can't go along with the concept of getting what you want purely by focussing on wanting it. I'm sure there will be accusations that its me who has the problem, not him, and maybe by creating sufficient desire you might find some way to make it happen for yourself. I'd agree that becoming rich probably won't happen by accident, but I find aimless desire quite unattractive. The 'how' half of the book is equally over-simplified with 'fool-proof' wealth strategies that I would expect a rich person to feel insulted by. Again, maybe it's me. As for the accompanying CD, I've not managed to stay awake past the first 5 minutes of it yet, so a review is difficult other than to say it is certainly relaxing. Anyway, there are a few warnings for the skeptics amongst us, who might just be richer by keeping their money in their pocket instead of buying the book. I'd suggests reading Felix Dennis' book "How To Get Rich" first, and then decide whether you really should buy this one. Having said all of that, if the author wishes to use me in 'guinea pig' trials to prove that even the most hopeless case can succeed with his methods, then I'll gladly accept. Meanwhile, I might try to imagine myself thin and/or confident instead. Do you think that'll work?
