Great fun (2/2 people found this helpful)

This was a great fun read over the Christmas holidays, full of witty observations. Blythe's writing style is easy and off-the-cuff, mocking but friendly. And if anything the rants and asides are "grumpy old man" in character rather than juvenile. The "ways to get rid of carol singers" was hilarious. It's all the more funny because there are people who don't get the joke.

'I Hate Christmas'...I feel the same about this book... (0/3 people found this helpful)

Books don't normally annoy me, but this one surely does.

It's not that the topic isn't worthy of exposing.
Christmas is a farce, but no less loveable because
of it! And it can be fun highlighting how ridiculous we
all are over this period.
It's just that this is such a bad book. Juvenile,
hugely predictable and nasty without being at all
funny.
And the irony of it all is that it's pandering to exactly
the consumers whom he is mocking.
But maybe that comes up in later chapters...I gave
up on Chapter 12, so I'll never know...wish I'd kept
the receipt.
Next year, buy 'Skipping Christmas' by John
Grisham...someone who understands irony.

BEST LAUGH THIS XMAS! (3/3 people found this helpful)

I love this book!!! And don't get me wrong, I count myself among those who love Xmas!! It's simply hilarious and too true in picking out the odd, tacky and darn right crazy elements of this season. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't be able to relate to the book in some way and it's been a life-saver for my Xmas shopping!! So what if all my friends and family are getting the same gift this year? They might gripe about it at first, but after a few pages they'll be laughing out loud and proclaiming me best Santa ever! Cheers Daniel!

I Hate Christmas (2/3 people found this helpful)

Brilliant, fantastic, wonderful! It was my words exactly! I have always loathed Christmas and the sheer hypocrisy and the dreadful commercialisation of the damned thing. As a life-long athiest brought up in an athiest family, I have never seen the need to celebrate this tacky rubbish, and Daniel is a man after my own heart! All I can say is Bah Humbug to the 25th of December and Happy New Year to Daniel and all his readers!
