Reader Reviews:

5/5 stars

The best book about Botham and a great cricket read too (1/1 people found this helpful)

Genuinely revealing, Doust writes about the early peaks of Botham's career (publication came just before the miracle of 1981 and long before the steady deterioration of the late 80s) with intelligence and brilliant detail.
I read this as a kid over and over again as a sort of devotion to my idol, but it actually stands up to adult reading.
You get a genuine sense of the man, the presence he carried into his teams, both at England and at Somerset, and of the nuts and bolts of playing Test cricket. Good contributions from Sunil Gavaskar and Brearley top this off.
I wonder what Doust is doing now. He is definitely in the top ten sports journalists of the last 25 years, and this is one of his best pieces of work.
