Editorial Review:Unlike most iMac books, iMac (and iBook) I Didn't Know You Could Do That... isn't aimed at complete beginners. It's a tips and tricks book for people who have mastered the basics and are wondering what else their computer can do. It may also appeal to long-time Mac users who have recently purchased an iMac or iBook. The book consists of around 100 short chapters or "essays" highlighting different things you can do with an iMac. Some focus on a practical task, such as sending faxes or creating icons, and have step-by-step instructions. Others explain how to upgrade your iMac or sort out problems in more general terms. The final 50 or so introduce the freeware, shareware and demo programs on the accompanying CD. These include utilities, graphics programs, business applications and games. Author Bob McVitus has written over 30 computing books, mostly about Apple Macs, and his enthusiasm and experience are obvious (the book opens with the words, "I love the iMac".). His writing style is chatty and upbeat, and you feel he'd be keen to pop round and show you a bunch more cool stuff if only America were a bit closer. It isn't all fluff and gush, though, and there is also plenty of sensible advice, especially in the section on keeping your iMac running smoothly. Some chapters aren't applicable to readers outside the US, and inevitably some won't be of interest. As a grab-bag of ideas and software, though, this book is reasonable value and good fun. --Mary Lojkine Reader Reviews:Good for basics, plus lots of freeware / shareware. (0/0 people found this helpful)This is a good all round starters book for anyone with an iMac or iBook. It has all the usual 'How to...' stuff for basic program and desktop use plus maintainance tips etc. Plus a CD full of useful shareware and freeware covering everything (almost) with a brief summary of what each programme does and how to use it.
