Reader Reviews:delightful and compelling (0/0 people found this helpful)I agree entirely with all the other 5 star reviews; once the first page has been turned there is no going back, you're hooked. Delightful, charming, India as it is, poor, its intricate culture unfathomable to the mere passerby, but as Will discovered wait awhile let India wrap itself around you, and you'll see great riches you never imagined, those of love and humility, inginuity, charm, resource and infectious overwhelming verve. I just didn't want the adventure to end, I tell everyone about this book, working it into conversations whenever I can, I want the world to read it and enjoy it too. Poor mans Shantaram? (1/2 people found this helpful)A British school teacher heads off to India to teach in the slums. It's amusing and easy to read. But I would argue that it's a poor mans Shantaram. Shantaram is much better, and more emotional. I've read a few books recently about true life stories of people living in India. And Shantaram is by far the best. This is still good tho. Pick up a copy and when you're ready, give Shantaram a go. You won't be disappointed by either. memorable!!!!!! (3/3 people found this helpful)this is a fabulous book which is both humourous and heart breaking. the author by amazing coincidence ends up teaching English to a group of orphan children. its inspiring, emotional yet funny too. Fabulous read you wont be disappointed. A harassed teacher finds fulfilment in India (7/7 people found this helpful)Will Randall, bored with teaching in an english school, accepts an invitation from an eccentic elderly lady to accompany her on her annual journey to India to spend time with her lover. Once in India, he travels to Poona where he finds himself beguiled into teaching English at an ashram for homeless children.
Warm hearted read that has made me want to go to India! (7/7 people found this helpful)I bought the book as the reviews on Amazon were so good, and am glad that I took their advice. A well written, lighthearted travel book that genuinely draws you in, I found myself laughing a lot and was disappointed when i had finished it, a great holiday read!
