I have at last found what I have been looking for for 40 years. A comprehensive record of the explosive days of the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warszaw Pact countries. Koudelka's superb pictures reflect the moods and feelings of not just the Czech victims of this event, but also those of the invaders. The photographs also reflect Prague of the 60's, and brings back memories of a communist state at the time.
I had a visa to visit Czechoslovakia in 1968. I missed the invasion, but still decided to go. I arrived just after the occupation, but I couldn't afford my own camera at the time. The faces I met in Prague are the faces portrayed in the book. Young people with flags soaked in blood. People protesting against the violation of their country. Stirring memories of chalked protests on grimy buildings.
Koudelka rightly deserves the highest praise for his dedication for his dedication to his task during this difficult and dangerous time. He could be said to have achieved his Magnum status through this epic work. The pictures with the summaries and chronologies make this a must for the student of this invasion, which in August took place 40 years ago. Similar Products
