A bit of an oddity, this: a selection from a longer work - first published in 1894 - which was itself drawn from many compilations of tales. The contents, not all fairy tales, range from the rustic buffoonery of `Hudden and Dudden' to the elegiac bardism of the Children of Lir and the Sons of Uislu. The illustrations are an equally ill-assorted mix of Rackhamesque romanticism and cartoon-like grotesques.
Whilst the stories are not wholesale re-tellings, the editor obviously felt free to `improve' or abbreviate them where he saw fit. Collections of this vintage are apt to suffer more from their high-flown Victorian prose than from the ancient source material; yet here, despite the degree of removal from the original oral stories, most are well written without being overtly modern. Although some are probably not suitable for small children, at the price this is a worthwhile introduction to Irish tales for good younger readers and interested adults.
