Excellent history book. (1/1 people found this helpful)

A must read for anyone interested in Operation "Market Garden" and the great battles of WW II in general. Superbly researched and well-written, it demolishes the myth of the allegedly German material "superiority" during that epic battle.

Paperback edition (2/2 people found this helpful)

I bought this book 18 months ago and was really pleased of the content either written(I use it for reference with my WW2 forums) or the numerous pictures and maps/recon pictures by allied planes. These documents really helped the reader to go through this fantastic book.
While in a library yesterday,I've noticed Mr Kershaw's book was now available in paperback edition.I have nothing against paperback.Same content ,cheaper price so why not?
Well unfortunately while I was flicking through I've noticed most of the pictures and maps are missing.
It's a shame really and I would recommend the hardback edition for this reason only.
My 3 stars rating is not for the content but for the laziness of the publisher.

Great! (0/1 people found this helpful)

This is a great piece of work! I've read many books about Market Garden, but this one fills many gaps left by others and paints a picture from the German point of view. Deep respect for all those brave soldiers who took part from both the German and allied armies.

Rare glimpse into a desperate war machine (1/1 people found this helpful)

Read how junior leaders of an army on it's last legs saved the situation against elite enemy troops. Usually not realized is that the German victory in september 1944 was paid for dearly. At a terrible, terrible cost raw recruits were thrown against the best the allies could muster and they barely prevailed. But it is also the story extraordinary deeds of heroism and unusual chivalry. The book is a bit confusing in structure but very well worth reading. A all to rare sight "on the other side of the hill",

An excellent resource (3/3 people found this helpful)

This book is an outstanding piece of work, and invaluable to anyone who wants a balanced view of Operation Market-Garden.

The entire operation is covered, from top to bottom, from the German perspective, and not just those actions around the Arnhem and Oosterbeek areas. Liberally illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs, many I hadn't seen elsewhere before, and with colour and black-and-white maps, and rounded off with an excellent Appendix at the back of the book that details the Order-of-battle of the many varied Axis units involved in trying to contain the Allies daring push into Holland. Considering the German practice of assembling 'kamfgruppes' from all manner of sources of equipment and manpower, this section alone is worthy of high praise.

The author has done an excellent job in providing considerable insight into the actions and decisions of the leaders and men who prevented this Operation from achieving it's goals. Anyone who has studied this particular part of the late war North-West Europe campaign would do well to include this book in their library. Highly recommended.
