got me from 0 to 100% in a few days (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is a good book - I knew nothing about servlets (but did know Java), and this publication got me up to speed in no time. I don't know how it is as an advanced reference (I'm not at that level yet), but at the beginning/intermediate level, it's great.

Some flaws but good overall. (2/2 people found this helpful)

There's lots of stuff here, ideas about sessions, an example of practically everything that's currently being done in CGI and Perl. True, the examples are laid out in bits and pieces. The introduction is worrying when it says the code (not on CD) is "available for purchase on the Manning Web Site". I found it to be free. But presumably the aim of such a book is to turn someone into a servlet convert, and I am now one. Take note web space providers!

An excellent real-world Servlet book (0/0 people found this helpful)

Having looked through some of these comments before I have to say one of them is a little harsh. I believe the book is well laid out, with a clear and concise progression throughout the whole servlet life cycle. This book also benefits from the fact that it covers the 2.1 API where as the others do not. It is a great book, and I have it on my desk all the time to use for reference.

Great example code (0/0 people found this helpful)

I have to say this is the first book for a while with loads of reuseable examples. It has some great tips for efficient code, something a lot of other books don't seem to care about!

I'm surprised at the previous review. I have not read the whole book, but I've read enough of it form a favorable opinion.

One of the first things the book tells you is that the entire source code can be downloaded off the web in zip format, so I'm puzzled why the previous reviewer found this so bad. Java in a Nutshell 2nd Ed does the same (no CD), as well as so many others. As for the sample code being fragmented, most of the examples end by giving the entire code, so chopping it up in the discussion can only help reader focus. Typesetting and captioning are more a matter of aesthetics, but this book exhibits nothing unusual so as to warrant the previous reviewer's comments (the Core Java series from Sunsoft Press has captions below, so is this unusual?)

I like the way the book gives the class/interface specifications before further discussions. Discussions on performance and implementation are helpful, especially those who want to thin out their old applets using servlets. I have not read the full examples in detail, but a preliminary read gave me a good impression of the exposition. It's true that there are many such implementations available on the Web, but it's more of the thinking behind the coding that I'm after.

I normally don't give 5 stars, but I felt that the last review was not very fair, so some sort of balance is in order. It helps though to know some Java when reading this book.
