I wish! (1/2 people found this helpful)

So you're a depressed, fat, lonely woman trudging to work every day at a dead end job . . . . finally, you decide to change things, you start going to the gym, you start spending time with people and in no time you're gorgeous, skinny with a fabulous life, dream man and an amazing job . . . what can I say, its pure fantasy chicklit, completely unrealistic and I really shouldn't like it but I do. Its one of those books that you read when you just need something to light cheer you up on your way to another day at work - read it, enjoy it and indulge in fantasy for a little while . .

foolish (2/2 people found this helpful)

This is just a modern Cinderella but instead of rags to riches, it's fat to thin. When you're thin life becomes wonderful: what a terrible message to give to today's women who are under enough pressure to conform to superficial expectations. I think this is perhaps the most foolish and shallow book I have ever read!

Unrealistic but I am up for a fairytale any day of the week (0/1 people found this helpful)

Brilliant- my absolute favorite Jane Green book of all time.
It is, let me just tell you, incredibly unrealistic. I don't want to spoil it but some of the things that happen- could that really happen in real life?
Regardless, when I stick my head into a novel I block out reality. This book was immensely enjoyable and I loved every (well almost every) moment of it.

One Of Jane Greens Best (0/1 people found this helpful)

This is the first Jane Green book that I read and I loved it from the start. You can really feel what Jemima is going through and all the emotions that are with it. It is one of my favorite books and it got me into Jane Green totaly and now I buy all of her books. I would recommend anyone to read it....what can I say Jane Green at her best.

I could do without the flippancy of what is a serious problem for many women... (2/3 people found this helpful)

I read "Jemima J" a few years ago when I was about fifteen. Since, I have read all of Jane Green's books to date.

I love Jane Green; she is the queen of light-hearted chick lit. Her books are easygoing [generally] with characters who are relateable and real. "Jemima J" is different. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the novel because it's someone else's world to get lost in even if it is merely fictional, but I find such an emphasis on weight to be both stereotypical and disturbing. Jemima was not beautiful until she was slim; she was not accepted until she was slim. Ben didn't fall in love with her until she was slim.

As a "not a girl, not a woman" myself [I am 19] I wonder what kind of message this sends out to women, as I am certainly not the only girl of my age that reads this. I am well aware that it's fictional and not to be taken too seriously but at the same time, Green's flippant take on binge eating etc wasn't taken seriously enough and was portrayed as superficial.

I don't expect chick-lit to change the world, and I don't expect it to always be "realistic" [some of the plot was a little far fetched] but I do expect issues such as eating disorders [which let's face it, Jemima has] to be taken a little more seriously especially when these type of novels are written BY women FOR women.
