Reader Reviews:Mostly funny but also sad at times... (4/4 people found this helpful)Another one of Alan Gibbons' books orientated around football! But this time a little more...romance is included. As we travel through 15- year-old Terry's diary accounts, we learn that things cant get much worse for him. Mad about football, England lose to Romania at Euro 2000 the same night as his parents unexpectedly announce that they are splitting up. As if there wasn't enough going on for Terry, it is also the same day when he falls madly in love with a new girl at school, Julie! Terry is a dedicated Man U supporter, so finding out that Julie supports Liverpool shatters him even more. To make things harder still, he will have strong competition in getting the girl he has fallen madly in love for, as the schools golden boy, 'Frisky Fitzy' also has his eyes on her! Julie however, is mad about footballer Michael Owen...who, lets not forget, plays for Liverpool! This means, to get anywhere with Julie, Terry may have to make many difficult compromises revolving around the lens in which he looks at life through, football! So as you can imagine, simultaneously trying to cope with fist love, the unexpected break up of his parents' marriage and the defeat of 'The Beautiful Game,' Terry falls into all kinds of interesting situations from which he tries to squiggle out of unharmed! But as you read further into the book, things start to improve for Terry and his life as he knows it, begins to change totally... The book is very up to date and illustrates very well, typical teenage life. There are times when it is hilariously funny and times when we are invited to sympathise with Terry. But it follows the true Alan Gibbons style, once you begin to read it, you have to finish reading it! Alan Gibbons has also won a Blue Peter Book Award, in the category, 'Book I couldn't Put Down.'
