Reader Reviews:

3/5 stars

the war on tourism (2/2 people found this helpful)

Told in chronological order, so you only know what she knew at the time, by the time you get the background in the last third of the book - you have to look up the names of who was who to work out the connections. That's a nuisance, but the narrative is true to itself.
Its only in the last third of the book, (Perhaps after she'd decided to write a book?), that her note taking and writing becomes really clear. The account of her meeting with the british terrorist prisoners in Yemeni jail is beautifuly observed and presented with complete clarity.
Personally I think it could / should have been edited down into something tighter, but that would've left out the mid life crisis / new career woman context which perhaps broadens its market.
But Mary agrees: Yemen is gorgeous, the people are the best, and its a great place for a holiday.
