Language and Travel Guide to Ukraine

This guidebook is not for backpackers roughing it around Ukraine. Focus rather seems to be on travellers with money on their pocket, which might explain why there are hardly any prices listed (for anything).

The maps were good for a laugh, as they were 'hand drawn' and lacked any kind of detail. Which corresponds with the rest of the book: it has the big cities, but smaller 'off the beaten path' towns (if there is such a thing in a country which itself is off that path) were hardly mentioned at all.

The language section is interesting, with a good introduction to grammar and language. Unfortunately there is no easy acess vocabulary and some of the phrases are 'funny' to say the least. For instance there is no sentence for 'How old are you' but 'How old are your children' is there.

While the book provided some useful maps and information as preparation before the trip, I discovered that some sections were in need of updating. I also found that it was a very unbalanced view of the situation there. The authors seem to prefer the positive over the reality. This book should not be relied on as a single reference.

We thoroughly enjoyed this book as we prepared for our trip. We found it somewhat lacking once we arrived. The experience of visiting the country left us with the impression the authors had written it wearing rose-colored glasses. Don't pass it up for the hard information. Take the excited prose with a grain of salt.
