1/5 stars

For reference only! (16/22 people found this helpful)

You will never learn to communicate in Irish with this book, unless you want to say stuff like 'The stallion is here. It is not big.' It's from the Stone Age of language teaching methodology, useful as a grammar and pronunciation reference but not for learning to use the language.

5/5 stars

Hard work and only for the serious student, but good (26/27 people found this helpful)

Unlike most teach-yourself Gaeilge books this one tackles the grammar without pretending you can just "pick it up". No you can't. If you are truly interested in learning the foundations of Irish over 2 years, if you are fairly good at languages, if you are OK about learning a specific dialect (Cois Fharrige, just west of Galway)... then this book is the one to get. If you need some colloquial Irish in the mean time, why not get one of the lighter books & go through it in parallel. Incidentally, if you are mortal you will become very confused about the copula, among other things, but keep faith - there is light at the end of the tunnel.

4/5 stars

A good book - if a bit boring at times (10/11 people found this helpful)

This is an excellent introduction to Irish. It concentrates on giving the learner a real linguistic model of how Irish is spoken on the west coast of Ireland. The only drawback is that at times it can be a bit boring, but of all the courses I have seen this is probably the best.
