" no, no, no, no, no Mr Abnett ! (0/6 people found this helpful)

After his earlier effort in the heresy i was so looking forward to the next installment! Unfortunately he released this instead and what a woeful effort it is ! I unfortunately spent most of the book wondering where the hell it was going, but just when you thought all was lost it all comes together at the end ! Joy ! But ! This is NOT what Abnett fans were expecting ! The dialogue and humour as always was excellent but the plot was far from excitng !

Legionnaires disease (0/6 people found this helpful)

Easily the second worst book in the series. Not quite as disappointing as Descent Of Angels, but close. The plot is woeful. The characters are unimaginative and bland, and the links to the series are tenuous. I really cannot identify with or feel anything for the characters in the book. To be honest cant even remember who's who. Thats how weak the characters are. Seems this is just another BL cash in off the back of a series that started off really well. More fool me for continuing with this story. It seems Black Library know they have us hooked and can pump out any old trash between the start and the end and we will lap it up. Roll on the end of the Heresy.

Love it (1/1 people found this helpful)

1 word; fantastic!
having read all the previous books in the Horus Heresy Storyline i had great expectations for this one. i was greatly suprised to find that i enjoyed more than the other books (even Fulgrim which i also loved). having always been a fan of the Alpha Legion it was great to see what they were about in depth from the Imperial Armies point of view (but dont let that put you off, the Astartes still play the central role).
The twists at the end were very good.
5 stars would reccommend this book and the series to anyone.

Not a Abnett fan (0/9 people found this helpful)

First off I am not an Abnett fan. there is no perticular reason for this i just don't enjoy him like other warhammer 40K fans do. I did however enjoy Horus rising a great deal and was hoping for a book which would stir my interest. The book however is a standered middle of the serise set up for the books that follow. It was nothing more then a glorified place holder accounting for what happened in the previous few books. Yes the twists at the end were interesting but you have to plod through the rest of the book to read them. This give a feeling of disapointment and apathy when you reach the ending, good but would have beem better if the entire story could have been as interesting as the twists

The Heressy back on track (6/7 people found this helpful)

Finally, after the huge disappointment of the previous book in this excellent series, Descent of Angels (which was poorly written and has nothing whatsoever to do with the Heresy), Dan Abnett returns to create what I consider to be the best book in the series so far.

Set on the world of Nurth, two years before the Heresy and before Horus becomes Warmaster, the book follows the exploits of Alpha Legion's role within a war of compliance. However, unlike previous books, Legion is told from the point of view of the Imperial Army. Don't let this fool you though; Alpha Legion is very much the central theme, specifically the question of whether they can be trusted. The novel weaves a tale of suspicion and intrigue with plot twists and turns at every step of the way. Everybody suspects everyone else and it's not until the very end that it all becomes clear, yet you're still left with enough questions unanswered to drive the story forward.

Dan Abnett's character development is second to none in this series and he particularly excels within this story. The characters are three dimensional and engaging. Some are charming and likeable while others are egotistical yet are so well rounded you love to hate them. As a newcomer to the 40K universe, I definitely found Alpha Legion to be the most interesting and complex Astartes Legion written about so far and one could argue that they were not explored enough within the book. However, to do so would be to miss the point of the book. Alpha Legion is an enigma and remains so throughout so that you're kept on the edge of your seat, wanting to know who exactly is playing who. The ending is also the best there's been in the series to-date showing Alpha Legion's choice to follow Horus to be, unlike the other traitor Legions, not quite so black and white and just like the choices we have to make in real life, far more complex than would appear upon the surface.

If I have to make a complaint about this book, it would be that there was a couple of instances where continuity with the previous books was broken but like the complaint, they are just a minor issue and don't spoil your enjoyment. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable read and definite page turner unlike the previous book which I struggled to get through. The Heresy is back on track and I can't wait to read the next instalment.
