Is there room for yet another book on The Beatles? Probably not, but then again this is a book detailing the solo work of Lennon and McCartney, and with their plethora of post Fabs output, there has been a need for a critical disection for some time. Beginning with McCartney's first solo project, 'Love In The Open Air', and running through to 'Ecce Cor Meum' from September 2006, author John Blaney tries to examine the undoubted highs as well as the embarrassing lows.

Each release has enough in-depth commentary to keep the most rabid of fans happy and for those who want to seek out any missing gaps in their collection, some extra data is available: for all you record fair enthusiasts, McCartney's 'Figure of Eight' was issued in eight configurations.

Whilst Blaney's opinions on the songs may not meet your own, remember that's exactly what they are. Read past that and you'll discover things you never knew. How many have seen the incredibly hard to find 'Give Peace A Chance/Cold Turkey' single on a shortlived golden oldies reissue campaign from EMI. (Apple G45 is the catalogue number for those looking out.)

This book is a good companion to the two Lewisohn epics and Ritchie Unterberger's 'The Unreleased Beatles'. Let's hope Blaney follows this up with a George and Ringo appraisal. It's a pity the cover photo has Lennon and McCartney the wrong way round.
