Editorial Review:Programmers and developers using Macromedia's Director multimedia software need to speak the Lingo to get the most from its highly defined control mechanisms. A programming language designed with multimedia in mind, learning Lingo can be an interesting experience, especially for those who rely on the online documentation and barely-useful manuals provided by Macromedia as standard. Covering versions from 5 to 6.5 it may seem that this tome is already out of date (given that the software is already at version seven) but nothing could be further from the truth. According to the author, many of the new features touted in v7 were made available in 6.5 and his personal Web site is kept up to date with any amendments and additions necessary to keep the book fresh. In six segments, Lingo in a Nutshell guides users of all abilities through the world of Lingo, covering event-driven programming data types, debugging hints ands tips information on behaviours ands Xtras, surpassing the vast majority of printed resources then kicking sand in their respective faces. There's so much information in here that it's difficult to take it all in, and this forms only 50 per cent of author Bruce Epstein's Director experience. A companion volume, Director in a Nutshell is also available which takes a longer look at the whole Director design interface as well as providing more background to the Lingo language. Irrespective of your programming ability there's something here for all users, the chapter of undocumented Lingo commands being particularly useful(not to say interesting). If you're a Lingo user there's only book you should buy this year, and it's this one. Reader Reviews:Indispensible (3/3 people found this helpful)Out of all the books on this subject I would say that this book, along with its companion "Director in a Nutshell" is the only truly essential guide. I just wish an updated version would come out! Buy it. A must Have! (2/2 people found this helpful)This book provides the most reliable and consistent information about Lingo programming. The author will teach you how to use all the resources that Lingo offers, even the ones that you have never heard of. The organization of the book is very clear and efficient. Its tables provide you detailed and clear information about any lingo you want to use. I took the habit to have it open on my desk as my reference book. Indispensable (4/4 people found this helpful)A typical O'Rielly book; dry, heavy and utterly indispensable. If you are a beginner to Lingo forget it, it covers the subject in too much depth and will be very confusing. However once you have reached an intermediate stage there's no substitute. You will get more from this book if you understand programming. I mention this as some people come to Lingo from a non-programming background. However, dive in and you'll learn lots. The book can be used as a text book and a reference, which makes it particularly good for dealing with those last minute bugs we all get. The book is laid out in logical sections with each chapter covering a topic, hence it can be read in chapters as well as from cover to cover. It makes lots of reference to the companion book "Director in a nutshell", an equally good work, but what is lacking is an electronic link between the two. These two books really would benefit from being published on CD. I think I own just about every book published about Lingo and this one really is head and shoulders above the rest.
