I've been using open source operating systems for around 3 years and I heard about the OpenWRT project around 6 months ago. It was only this week that I decided to give it a go.
I bought a WRT54GL (v1.1) and spent Saturday following the book to install and hack OpenWRT. While the book is somewhat 'old' in that it is written for OpenWRT 'WhiteRussian' (v0.9), installing and hacking the latest OpenWRT 'Kamikaze' (v7.09) was just as easy and a lot of the OpenWRT software hacks still apply to Kamikaze.
However, the book is not just about OpenWRT. It also goes into detail with other 3d party firmware that runs on the WRT54* device. There are hardware hacks as well.
The book is a treasure trove and I recommend it to anyone who is interest in open source, networking or just likes to tinker with PCs.
