Good guide for the price (1/1 people found this helpful)

This guide gave very good general advice about Lithuania today, as well as accurate details of sites worth visiting. Only drawback was the lack of photos.

Visitors to Lithuania please note: Comments regarding toilets - these are entirely true. Beware!

Excellent Guide (5/5 people found this helpful)

I bought this guide just before my first trip to this fascinating country.I found it to be indispensible and never go there without it even though I have a Lithuanian wife! Mr McLachlan has tried to cover as many topics to help the traveller as possible in the 294 pages. In particular he has written at some length about the two major cities, Vilnius(the capital) and Kaunas (the second city and former capital).

He deals with the main tourist attractions as one might expect in such a guide but goes much further. There is accurate information about how to travel around using the public transport system , a potted history of the country and each town as well as many suggestions about hotel and guest-house accomodation. He has also given helpful suggestions about eating (or drinking) out and you won't go wrong following these suggestions until you discover favourites of your own.

The cultural notes given in the front section of the book are particularly useful both practically and as a guide to these proud people. There is even a small section at the back of the book with some helpful words and phrases although the reader should be warned that the stresses used in Lithuanian words are much different to what we expect in the UK and you may well get blank stares if you use these phrases! Finally, he has included suggestions for further reading and some helpful websites to feed your curiosity.

This guide is written in a very easily readable way but is packed on every page with gems of information. I read it often just for pleasure but maybe I should get out more - oh yes, I am going to live there soon!
