A reasonable overview of life in the USA, but without any real depth of information to back it up. I didn't feel that many of my questions or curiosities had been satisfied after reading it.
The opening chapters on why you might want to visit or emigrate to the USA are quite good and encourage you to think about what you're looking for. However, I felt it went downhill from there; the chapter on immigration in particular is too oversimplified and ignores completely the entire immediate-family category.
I also felt that the book didn't engage me much on a personal level: the prose is quite dry with little of the author's personality showing, and the book focusses mainly on the practicalities of living in the States and says little about adjusting on a social level to American customs.
Buy David Hampshire's book of the same title and a good book on immigration instead.
